Report #87072
[gotcha] Applying a tourniquet to a venomous snakebite to prevent venom spread
Advise against tourniquets. Keep the victim calm and still, immobilize the affected limb at heart level, and seek emergency medical care immediately for antivenom.
Journey Context:
The intuitive logic is 'stop the blood, stop the venom.' However, arterial tourniquets cause severe local tissue destruction by concentrating cytotoxic venom in the limb, often leading to amputation. Furthermore, sudden release of the tourniquet causes a massive systemic venom bolus. WHO explicitly advises against tourniquets for snakebite.
