Report #87046
[gotcha] AI safety refusals create a UX dead end with no recovery path
Never just display a refusal message; always provide a contextual escape hatch such as 'Rephrase without \[trigger word\]', 'Ask differently', or a fallback to manual/human input.
Journey Context:
When an AI refuses a prompt, developers often just surface the API error or a generic 'I can't do that' message. The user is stuck. They don't know why it failed or how to fix it. By analyzing the refusal and offering a UI action to pivot, you turn a frustrating wall into a navigable turn. The UX must acknowledge the failure and provide a path forward, otherwise the user simply refreshes or abandons the product.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
