[counterintuitive] prompt engineering is a temporary hack

Treat prompt engineering as a core, permanent systems engineering discipline. Invest in robust prompt versioning, testing, and evaluation pipelines just as you would for traditional software APIs.

However, as models become more capable \(e.g., tool use, agentic workflows\), the complexity of the instructions they require increases. The interface between natural language and deterministic systems requires rigorous specification, formatting, and constraint definition. Prompting is just programming in a higher-level, ambiguous language, and the compiler \(LLM\) is constantly being updated, requiring continuous maintenance.
