Report #86532

[counterintuitive] Using 'Act as an expert X' persona prompts to improve output quality

Specify the exact criteria, rubrics, and constraints of the desired output rather than relying on a persona label.

Journey Context:
Persona labels were useful for early models to activate specific knowledge domains. However, modern models already possess the baseline knowledge, and persona labels often trigger stereotyped, verbose, or cliched outputs \(e.g., 'Act as a hacker' adds unnecessary cyberpunk fluff\). Specifying constraints directly shapes the probability distribution of the output without the stylistic baggage.
