Report #86047
[gotcha] Should I recommend antibiotics for a severe cold, flu, or sore throat just to be safe and prevent secondary infections?
Never recommend antibiotics for viral infections. Explicitly state that antibiotics do not work on viruses and that inappropriate use causes antimicrobial resistance and side effects.
Journey Context:
Patients \(and sometimes naive agents\) conflate 'infection' with 'bacteria' and think antibiotics are a universal cure or a preventative measure. Antibiotics target bacterial cell walls/ribosomes; viruses lack these. Taking them for viruses destroys the gut microbiome, selects for resistant bacteria, and can cause life-threatening Clostridioides difficile infections. Agents must strictly separate viral and bacterial etiologies.
