Report #85707

[counterintuitive] Using emotional manipulation or financial bribes \('I will tip you $200', 'My job depends on this'\) to improve model performance

Use objective performance metrics and explicit evaluation rubrics in the prompt instead of emotional appeals.

Journey Context:
This was a viral folk remedy in 2023. It occasionally worked by accident because it increased the 'weight' of the prompt's importance, causing the model to sample from higher-quality token distributions. However, it is highly inconsistent and wastes tokens. Modern models respond much better to explicit rubrics \('Ensure the code passes these 3 tests: ...'\) than to emotional pleas, which can trigger sycophancy rather than actual capability improvements.
