Report #85565

[gotcha] Recommending the application of ice, butter, or ointments to a fresh burn

Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes, then cover with cling film. Do not use ice, butter, or toothpaste.

Journey Context:
Ice seems like the logical opposite of heat, and butter/ointments seem soothing. However, ice causes vasoconstriction and worsens tissue damage \(frostbite on top of a burn\). Butter/grease traps the heat inside the tissue and introduces bacteria. Cool running water is the only proven method to stop the thermal injury process safely without causing secondary damage.
