Report #8547
[research] LLM hallucinates because it is torn between conflicting instructions \(e.g., be concise vs cite everything\) leading to fabricated shortcuts
Audit system prompts for conflicting constraints. If a task requires high factuality, prioritize and explicitly order constraints \(e.g., Factuality is priority 1. If citing everything violates conciseness, keep the citations and drop other text.\).
Journey Context:
Models try to satisfy all constraints simultaneously. When constraints are mutually exclusive, the model fabricates shortcuts like fake URLs that look like citations but save tokens, or summarizes by inventing facts. Explicit prioritization resolves the constraint conflict.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
