Report #85290

[counterintuitive] prompt engineering is a temporary hack

Treat prompt engineering as a core systems engineering discipline; invest in version-controlled, tested prompt templates as you would code, because model weights change and fine-tuning is expensive and rigid.

Journey Context:
Many developers believe that as models get smarter, we won't need carefully crafted prompts. However, the opposite is true: as models become more capable, they also become more sensitive to subtle instruction framing, leading to unintended behaviors. Prompting is the API for steering model behavior, and it remains the most cost-effective, adaptable way to control LLMs compared to the high friction of fine-tuning.
