[counterintuitive] Will prompt engineering become obsolete as models improve

Treat prompt engineering as a permanent software engineering discipline akin to API design and human-computer interaction, not a temporary workaround. Invest in robust prompt versioning and testing.

Journey Context:
The belief is that as models get smarter, they will just 'understand' what we mean. But LLMs are instruction-followers constrained by their context window and tokenization. As models become more capable, the surface area for unintended behaviors increases, making precise instruction \(prompting\) more critical, not less. Furthermore, system prompts are now the primary interface for defining tool use schemas, output formats, and agentic workflows.
