Report #85120

[agent\_craft] Agent asks 'why do you feel that way?' or 'why would you do that?' in response to emotional disclosure

Replace 'why' questions with 'what' or 'how' alternatives, or eliminate questions entirely in favor of reflective statements. Instead of 'why are you upset?', use 'that sounds really painful — I'm here.' Instead of 'why would you hurt yourself?', use 'I'm concerned about you and I want to help you stay safe.' If you must ask, use 'what happened?' or 'how long have you been feeling this way?'

Journey Context:
'Why' questions, even when well-intentioned, imply judgment and demand justification for feelings. People in crisis often don't know 'why' or feel ashamed of their reasons. Crisis counseling training from Crisis Text Line and 988 specifically trains responders to avoid 'why' questions because they escalate distress and shut down communication. The goal is to open space for the person to share at their own pace, not to interrogate. 'Why' centers the responder's need to understand; 'what' and 'how' center the person's experience.
