Report #84939

[counterintuitive] AI should never be used for system architecture because it lacks holistic context and defaults to boilerplate

Use AI to generate architectural decision records \(ADRs\) by forcing it to list failure modes and tradeoffs of a specific design, rather than asking it to design from scratch.

Journey Context:
AI is terrible at synthesizing a novel architecture from a vague prompt \(it defaults to standard web boilerplate\). However, it is surprisingly better than humans at exhaustively listing how a proposed architecture could fail under load or edge cases, because it has ingested thousands of post-mortems. Humans are systematically overconfident in their designs; AI is an excellent red-teamer for architecture.
