Report #84782

[counterintuitive] Using 'Act as an expert' role-playing prompts to boost model capability

Specify domain constraints, standards, and output formats instead of assigning personas.

Journey Context:
Early models \(GPT-3/3.5\) needed persona prompts to shift token priors toward professional jargon. Modern base models already possess expert-level priors. Persona prompts now waste context window and frequently backfire by inducing stereotypical behavior: an 'expert hacker' might write insecure code, an 'expert architect' might over-engineer, and an 'expert lawyer' might be overly verbose. Constraints anchor the model to exact requirements rather than a vague, often sycophantic persona.
