Report #8476

[gotcha] Storing unopened insulin in the freezer for longer shelf life

Never freeze insulin. Unopened insulin must be refrigerated \(2°C to 8°C / 36°F to 46°F\). Once frozen, it must be discarded as the proteins denature and become completely ineffective.

Journey Context:
A logical but fatal trap: users might think 'refrigerator keeps it good, freezer keeps it longer.' Freezing physically destroys the insulin molecule. If a diabetic injects previously frozen \(and now denatured\) insulin thinking it's active, they will go into Diabetic Ketoacidosis \(DKA\) without warning.
