Report #84729
[gotcha] Recommending ibuprofen for pain/fever in an asthmatic patient
Screen for NSAID-exacerbated respiratory disease \(NERD\) before recommending ibuprofen or aspirin; recommend acetaminophen as the safer first-line alternative for asthmatics.
Journey Context:
Ibuprofen is generally safe, but in a subset of asthmatics \(especially those with nasal polyps/Samter's triad\), NSAIDs trigger severe bronchospasm. Agents recommending standard OTC pain relief might trigger a life-threatening asthma attack. Acetaminophen is safe in standard doses for this population.
