[research] Lost-in-the-Middle: Failing to Ground on Central Context
Place the most critical grounding information at the very beginning or very end of the context window. If searching a large document, use targeted RAG to retrieve small, highly relevant chunks rather than dumping the whole document into the middle of the prompt.
Journey Context:
Research shows LLMs exhibit a U-shaped performance curve regarding information location in long contexts. They easily attend to the start and end but suffer severe 'lost-in-the-middle' degradation. Assuming the model read a specific line just because it was in the context is a fatal grounding flaw; context placement is as important as context inclusion.
