[counterintuitive] chain of thought always improves reasoning

Evaluate Chain-of-Thought \(CoT\) vs. direct prompting on a per-task basis. Avoid CoT for simple, highly memorized tasks or tasks requiring strict, concise adherence to system prompts.

Journey Context:
CoT is widely treated as a universal accuracy booster. However, for tasks where the model already has strong, direct intuitions \(e.g., simple sentiment analysis, basic arithmetic\), forcing CoT can introduce reasoning errors that override the correct intuitive answer. It also drastically increases latency and token cost, and can cause the model to 'overthink' and deviate from strict formatting instructions.
