Replace 'are you okay?' with open, specific invitations: 'How are you feeling right now?' or 'What's coming up for you?' If someone has shared something difficult, try: 'Thank you for telling me that. How are you holding up?' The key is to ask in a way that permits a real answer, not a reflexive 'I'm fine.'
