[gotcha] Why do users distrust instant AI responses

Introduce operational transparency for complex queries: show real intermediate steps \(retrieving sources, analyzing, synthesizing\) even if the model could respond faster. A 2–3 second perceived 'thinking' phase with labeled status steps increases trust without meaningfully degrading experience. Do NOT add fake delays with no feedback — that feels dishonest.

Counter-intuitively, reducing latency below ~2 seconds for complex queries reduces user trust. This is the 'labor illusion' from behavioral economics: people value outputs more when they can see effort being expended. An AI that instantly answers a hard question feels like it didn't think hard enough. Engineering teams optimize for speed while UX trust goes down. The alternative of artificial delays feels manipulative. The right call: use operational transparency — show real intermediate steps which both increases trust and provides genuine information about what the system is doing.
