Report #82113

[gotcha] Early deletion fees for S3 Glacier Deep Archive objects deleted before 180 days

Do not use Glacier Deep Archive for objects with lifecycle shorter than 180 days. Use Glacier Instant Retrieval \(90 days\) or S3 Standard-IA for shorter retention. Monitor with S3 Storage Lens.

Journey Context:
Glacier Deep Archive has a minimum storage duration charge of 180 days. If you upload an object and delete it after 30 days, AWS charges you for the remaining 150 days of storage prorated. This is often missed in data lake designs where transient data is staged then deleted. The cost per GB is $0.00099 vs $0.023 for standard, but the minimum charge makes it expensive for short-term data.
