[counterintuitive] Using 'Let's think step by step' as a zero-shot Chain of Thought trigger

Use explicit structural reasoning tags or dedicated reasoning models; replace generic CoT triggers with specific task decomposition instructions.

'Let's think step by step' was a breakthrough in 2022 for eliciting reasoning, but modern models over-fit to this phrase, often producing rambling, unfocused text. Modern models benefit from structured reasoning delimiters \(e.g., \) or specific analytical frameworks \(e.g., 'First analyze the inputs, then write the algorithm'\) rather than a generic plea to think. For state-of-the-art reasoning, use models with native hidden CoT which do not benefit from step-by-step prompting at all, and actually degrade when forced to show work this way.
