[synthesis] Why do AI product onboarding flows have unusually high early churn

Never use live AI generation for onboarding content. Use curated, deterministic onboarding experiences even if the product is AI-powered. Only introduce live AI generation after the user has formed an accurate mental model of the product's capabilities and limitations—typically after 3-5 successful deterministic interactions.

Journey Context:
Onboarding is where users form their mental model of a product. For traditional software, this model is built from deterministic UI interactions—the button always does the same thing, so the model is accurate. For AI products, if onboarding uses live AI generation and the AI hallucinates, the user forms an incorrect mental model in two directions: they either over-trust \(if the hallucination was impressively correct\) or under-trust \(if it was wrong\). Both lead to misuse. Over-trusting users rely on the AI for tasks it can't handle, leading to failures and churn. Under-trusting users never engage deeply enough to discover real value. The synthesis: this creates a positive feedback loop unique to AI products. The user's mental model is co-constructed with the AI's outputs during the most critical phase \(onboarding\), and a single hallucination can set off a death spiral where incorrect mental model leads to misuse, which leads to more failures, which leads to churn. No single source on onboarding best practices or hallucination mitigation identifies this interaction. The fix is counterintuitive: the AI product should deliberately not use AI during onboarding.
