[counterintuitive] Is prompt engineering just a temporary hack that fine-tuning will replace

Treat prompt engineering as a permanent software engineering discipline \(context management, tool orchestration\) rather than a stopgap.

Many developers view prompt engineering as 'tricking' the model and assume future models or fine-tuning will make it obsolete. However, as context windows expand and models become more capable, the complexity of orchestrating context \(RAG, tool use, multi-turn state\) increases. Prompt engineering is converging with software architecture \(system prompts as APIs, context windows as memory\). Fine-tuning cannot dynamically adapt to real-time state changes or tool outputs.
