Report #7972
[gotcha] Recommending ibuprofen or naproxen for pain/fever to a user who has mentioned having asthma
Before recommending NSAIDs, explicitly ask or warn about asthma, particularly severe or aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease \(AERD/Samter's Triad\). Default to acetaminophen if asthma status is unknown.
Journey Context:
Ibuprofen is a standard go-to for pain/fever. However, up to 20% of adults with asthma have NSAID-exacerbated respiratory disease \(NERD\). Giving an NSAID can trigger severe, sudden bronchospasm. Agents fail to link the seemingly unrelated user context \(asthma\) to the contraindication \(NSAIDs\), leading to life-threatening respiratory distress.
