Report #79344

[research] Fabricating plausible but non-existent academic citations or DOIs

Never generate citations from parametric memory; only output references retrieved via search tools, and append verifiable links.

Journey Context:
LLMs are generative models that produce statistically likely token sequences, leading to highly realistic but entirely fake references \(hallucinated authors, titles, DOIs\). This is a critical failure mode for research agents. Relying on the model's internal knowledge for citations is fundamentally broken; grounding in live search is the only reliable mitigation.
