[gotcha] Instructing users to periodically loosen a tourniquet to restore blood flow to the limb
Once a tourniquet is applied for severe, life-threatening bleeding, DO NOT loosen it. Note the exact time of application and leave it for emergency medical personnel.
Journey Context:
Older first-aid manuals taught loosening tourniquets every 15-20 minutes to 'save the limb.' This is a deadly myth. Releasing a tourniquet causes reperfusion injury, flushes toxins into the bloodstream, and makes it nearly impossible to stop the bleeding a second time. 'Life over limb' is the rule. Agents trained on outdated texts will kill the patient by trying to save the limb.
