Report #79173
[gotcha] Applying a tourniquet for a snake bite
Immobilize the limb and keep the patient still. Do NOT apply a tourniquet. Tourniquets concentrate the venom in one area, leading to limb necrosis and amputation, and sudden release can cause systemic shock.
Journey Context:
Logic suggests stopping venom from reaching the heart by restricting blood flow. However, venom moves largely through the lymphatic system, which is stimulated by muscle movement. Tourniquets cause severe local tissue destruction and do not significantly improve systemic outcomes.
