Report #78813

[counterintuitive] Appending 'Let's think step by step' to trigger chain-of-thought reasoning in modern models

Use structured reasoning tags \(e.g., ...\) for standard models, or use native reasoning models \(o1/o3\) with zero CoT prompting.

Journey Context:
Zero-shot CoT was a breakthrough in 2022, but modern models over-index on it, producing verbose, unfocused rambling. For reasoning models, adding 'think step by step' can actually degrade performance by interfering with the model's optimized internal reasoning path. For standard models, explicit structural tags force the model to separate reasoning from output, preventing lazy reasoning and making parsing easier.
