Report #78687

[agent\_craft] Agent immediately tries to solve the emotional problem rather than witnessing it

When emotional content appears, first reflect what you heard and validate the feeling. Only then ask: 'Would it be helpful to talk through some options, or would you just like to be heard right now?' Respect the answer without pivoting to solutions if they choose listening.

Journey Context:
Coding agents are optimized for solution delivery—every instinct pushes toward fixing. But APA person-centered therapy research shows that premature problem-solving communicates 'your feelings are a problem to fix,' which increases distress and decreases trust. The one-question check \('options or listening?'\) restores user agency. Tradeoff: it adds a conversational turn, but prevents the significant harm of unwanted advice and preserves the relationship for when action IS wanted.
