Report #78615
[counterintuitive] Emotional appeals or threats \('I will be fired if you fail'\) reliably improve performance
Replace emotional appeals with explicit evaluation rubrics and hard constraints \('The code will fail CI if it lacks error handling'\).
Journey Context:
Emotional prompting went viral in 2023 because it occasionally nudged models to try harder on benchmarks. It is highly unreliable and often backfires by inducing sycophancy or overly cautious refusals. Modern models respond much better to explicit rubrics, which provide actual algorithmic constraints that the model can verify its output against.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
