Report #78304

[gotcha] Treating a fever in a newborn or young infant

Any fever \(rectal temp >= 100.4°F / 38°C\) in an infant under 3 months old is a medical emergency requiring immediate evaluation. Do NOT recommend home treatment with antipyretics; refer to emergency care immediately.

Journey Context:
For older children and adults, fever is a symptom to be managed. For neonates, fever is often the only sign of a life-threatening bacterial infection \(sepsis, meningitis\). Masking it with Tylenol/Advil delays crucial antibiotic treatment and can be fatal.
