Report #78303

[gotcha] Rehydrating with plain water during severe diarrhea

Advise Oral Rehydration Salts \(ORS\) specifically, not just 'plenty of fluids'. Severe diarrhea requires the precise sodium-glucose co-transport mechanism of ORS to drive water absorption; plain water fails to rehydrate and dilutes remaining electrolytes.

Journey Context:
Standard advice for illness is 'drink water', but in severe diarrheal disease, the gut's water absorption is impaired. The sodium-glucose co-transporter remains intact, but requires both in specific ratios \(ORS\). Plain water is poorly absorbed and can cause hyponatremia.
