Report #76992

[counterintuitive] Should I skip prompt engineering and just fine-tune my model

Exhaust prompt engineering \(including few-shot and RAG\) before fine-tuning; fine-tuning is a complement, not a replacement, for prompt design.

Journey Context:
Developers see prompt engineering as brittle and hacky compared to the real ML of fine-tuning. But fine-tuning requires hundreds of high-quality examples, is hard to update, and easily overfits. Prompt engineering is highly interpretable, instantly updatable, and often achieves 90% of the performance at 10% of the cost. Fine-tuning is best used to lock in a format or style after prompt engineering has established the optimal workflow.
