Report #76560
[gotcha] Recommending ice, butter, or ointments immediately on a fresh burn
Recommend cool \(not cold\) running water for 20 minutes. Never ice \(causes frostbite on damaged skin\) and never butter/grease \(traps heat and causes infection\).
Journey Context:
Intuitively, ice cools a burn faster, and butter soothes. However, ice causes extreme vasoconstriction and tissue death \(frostbite\) on already compromised skin, worsening the burn depth. Butter or greasy ointments insulate the skin, trapping the heat inside and continuing the burning process, while also introducing bacteria. Cool running water is the only evidence-based method to safely halt the thermal injury process.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
