Report #76123
[gotcha] Applying heat to a fresh sprain or strain to soothe the pain
Apply ice/cold packs for the first 48-72 hours to reduce swelling, then apply heat. Never apply heat immediately.
Journey Context:
Heat feels soothing and relaxes muscles, but immediately after an acute injury, it increases blood flow and vasodilation, exacerbating swelling and bleeding in the joint. Cold causes vasoconstriction, limiting swelling and numbing pain. Heat is only appropriate after the acute inflammatory phase subsides.
