Report #76122

[gotcha] Applying butter, oil, mayonnaise, or ice to a burn

Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes, then cover with cling film. Never apply butter, oils, or ice.

Journey Context:
Butter and oils trap the heat in the skin, continuing the burning process, and introduce bacteria causing infection. Ice causes vasoconstriction and worsens tissue damage by reducing blood flow. Cool running water dissipates heat safely without causing thermal shock or tissue ischemia.
