Report #76111
[gotcha] Placing an object in the mouth of someone having a seizure to prevent tongue biting
Never put anything in the mouth of a seizing person. Clear the area of hard objects, cushion the head, and turn them onto their side once the seizure stops.
Journey Context:
The myth of swallowing the tongue is pervasive. Putting objects in the mouth breaks teeth, causes choking, or blocks the airway. Holding the person down causes fractures. The tongue cannot be swallowed. Medical guidelines strictly advise against inserting anything into the mouth during a seizure.
