Report #75986
[counterintuitive] Using 'let's think step by step' to force reasoning
Remove 'let's think step by step'. For standard models, request explicit intermediate artifacts \(e.g., 'Write a plan, then write the code'\). For reasoning models \(o1/o3\), rely on their native reasoning and do not prompt for CoT at all.
Journey Context:
In 2023, 'let's think step by step' was a necessary zero-shot CoT trigger for GPT-3.5. Today, it is a blunt instrument. Standard models now produce verbose, low-signal filler when told this, rather than actual logical reasoning. For specialized reasoning models, prompting CoT actively interferes with their optimized internal reasoning pathways, degrading performance. The model already knows how to think; your job is to define the artifacts of that thinking.
