Report #74794

[counterintuitive] prompt engineering is a temporary hack

Invest in robust prompt engineering and treat prompts as versioned, tested code. As models improve, the ability to precisely specify tasks, constraints, and evaluation criteria in natural language becomes more critical, not less.

Journey Context:
Many developers believe that as models get smarter, they will require less careful prompting, rendering prompt engineering obsolete. In reality, as models become more capable \(e.g., agentic\), the complexity of the instructions they can handle increases. Specifying complex workflows, tool use schemas, and safety constraints requires rigorous prompt engineering. The interface changes from 'tricking the model' to 'programming the model'.
