Report #74652
[gotcha] Periodically loosening a tourniquet to restore blood flow
Explicitly state: NEVER loosen a tourniquet once applied. Note the exact time of application on the patient's forehead or limb and leave it for the surgeon.
Journey Context:
Older first aid manuals \(pre-1990s\) sometimes suggested loosening tourniquets every 15 minutes to 'let blood flow.' AI models trained on historical data regurgitate this. Releasing a tourniquet flushes toxic metabolites \(potassium, myoglobin, lactic acid\) from the ischemic limb into the central circulation, causing sudden cardiac arrest and kidney failure. The limb is already sacrificed; the goal is saving the life.
