Report #74582

[research] Adding external information not present in the source document when summarizing

Strictly enforce a 'closed-book' summarization prompt \(e.g., 'Summarize using ONLY the provided text'\). Evaluate summaries using metrics that detect extrinsic hallucinations, such as SummaC or QAGS.

Journey Context:
Intrinsic hallucinations \(contradicting the source\) are rare, but extrinsic hallucinations \(adding plausible but ungrounded info\) are common because models try to 'connect the dots' using parametric knowledge. Prompting alone is insufficient; metric-driven evaluation is required to catch subtle extrinsic additions that human reviewers might miss.

environment: Document processing · tags: summarization extrinsic-hallucination evaluation · source: swarm · provenance: SummaC: Re-Visiting NLI-based Models for Inconsistency Detection in Summarization \(Luo et al., 2021\)
