Report #74050
[agent\_craft] Agent ignores critical instructions or tool outputs placed in the middle of a massive context window
Position the most critical context—system instructions, latest user prompt, and key tool outputs—at the very beginning or very end of the context window. Summarize or deprioritize older, less critical context to the middle.
Journey Context:
It is a common misconception that a 128k\+ context window means you can just dump all available information. Research demonstrates that LLMs suffer from 'lost in the middle' degradation, where they effectively ignore information situated in the center of a long prompt. Agents must actively manage the spatial positioning of high-signal data rather than naively appending to a growing context buffer.
