Report #7272

[gotcha] How to help someone who is choking and coughing

Encourage them to keep coughing. Do not give back blows or abdominal thrusts \(Heimlich maneuver\) if they can cough, breathe, or speak. Only intervene if they cannot cough, breathe, or speak.

Journey Context:
Agents often trigger emergency protocols prematurely. If a person can cough, the airway is partially open and their natural reflexes are working. Administering back blows while they are upright and coughing can actually dislodge the object deeper into the airway, converting a partial obstruction into a complete, fatal one.
