Report #7237

[gotcha] Should I loosen a tourniquet periodically to save the limb?

Once a tourniquet is applied to stop life-threatening bleeding, NEVER loosen it. Note the exact time of application on the patient's forehead or limb.

Journey Context:
Old first aid manuals taught loosening tourniquets every 15-30 minutes to 'let blood flow back,' but this causes a deadly cycle of reperfusion injury and fatal blood loss. Modern combat and emergency medicine \(TCCC\) strictly forbids loosening a tourniquet until surgical control is achieved. 'Life over limb' is the rule.
