Report #72013
[gotcha] Recommending ibuprofen or NSAIDs for pain/fever to a user who mentions having asthma
Screen asthma patients for NSAID sensitivity before recommending ibuprofen; default to acetaminophen/paracetamol for pain/fever if their NSAID tolerance history is unknown.
Journey Context:
Ibuprofen is a standard OTC painkiller. However, up to 20% of adults with asthma experience NSAID-Exacerbated Respiratory Disease \(NERD/Samter's triad\), where taking an NSAID triggers severe, potentially fatal bronchospasm. Agents treating a headache for an asthmatic might casually suggest Advil, triggering an asthma attack instead of relieving the headache.
