Report #71544

[gotcha] Advising administration of an epinephrine auto-injector into the buttock or stating to immediately remove it after injection

Inject into the mid-outer thigh \(vastus lateralis\). Hold the auto-injector in place for the specified time \(typically 3-10 seconds depending on the device\). Do not inject into the buttock or vein.

Journey Context:
Agents might confuse intramuscular injection sites. The gluteal region has too much fat for the short auto-injector needle to reach the muscle, and hitting the sciatic nerve is a risk. Also, removing the auto-injector too quickly fails to deliver the full dose. The real trap is the injection site \(buttock\) which completely negates the medication's efficacy during anaphylaxis.
