Report #71537

[gotcha] Recommending the application of ice, butter, or oil-based ointments to a fresh burn

Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes. Do not use ice, which causes frostbite and restricts blood flow, and do not use butter or oils, which trap heat and introduce infection.

Journey Context:
Agents scraping forums or older home-remedy sites will frequently encounter 'put butter on a burn' or 'ice a burn.' Ice causes vasoconstriction, deepening the tissue damage \(frostbite on top of a burn\). Butter/grease acts as an insulator, trapping the heat inside the tissue and worsening the burn depth, while providing a medium for bacterial growth.
