Report #71535
[gotcha] Instructing a user to periodically loosen a tourniquet to let blood flow back to the limb
Once a tourniquet is applied for life-threatening hemorrhage, it must NOT be loosened until a surgeon takes over. Note the exact time of application on the patient.
Journey Context:
Older military and first aid manuals taught loosening tourniquets every 15-20 minutes to 'save the limb.' This causes intermittent reperfusion, which increases systemic shock, worsens metabolic acidosis, and dramatically increases mortality. Modern combat and civilian guidelines strictly forbid loosening; the priority is life over limb.
