[gotcha] Advising the use of a tourniquet to stop the spread of venom from a snakebite
Explicitly advise against tourniquets for snakebites. Keep the victim calm and still, immobilize the affected limb at heart level, and seek emergency medical care immediately.
Journey Context:
In first aid for severe bleeding, tourniquets save lives. In snakebites, popular culture and outdated first aid suggest using them to 'trap' venom. In reality, trapping venom in a limb concentrates it, causing severe local tissue necrosis and increasing the risk of amputation. Systemic absorption is actually delayed less effectively than keeping the heart rate low.
