Report #70289

[counterintuitive] prompt engineering temporary hack

Treat prompt engineering as a permanent, first-class software engineering discipline; model architectures fundamentally rely on context to condition distributions, meaning precise instruction is a permanent feature, not a bug to be fixed by future models.

Journey Context:
Developers think 'we'll just fine-tune or wait for models to get smarter so we don't need complex prompts.' But autoregressive LLMs are few-shot learners whose behavior is entirely defined by the context window. As models get smarter, they also become more sensitive to nuanced instructions, making prompt engineering more important, not less. Prompting is the API for programming the model's behavior at inference time.
